Johnny Depp is a favorite actor all around, most people like him, and

don;t have too much bad stuff to say about him.

I have always liked Edward Scissorhands movie from a long time ago

(1990), I think he was the only one that could have pulled that movie

off. I love when he asks the boy " Hey do you want to play rock, paper

scissors again?" The boy replies "No because I always win" HAHA. I

love how he sculpts the bushes and cuts the womens hair and they all

think he is the best thing since sliced bread. I think it was easy to

fall in love with this "freakish" guy.

And then came Pirates of the Caribbean. There are way too many funny

quotes from that movie. But I do like when he is walking down the dock

and Murtogg says that there are no civilians alowed, so Jack Sarrow

(Depp) replies "I'm terribly sorry, I didn't know. If I see one, I

shall inform you immediately. " Funny!

If I had to pick between the two I would have to say Edward

Scissorhands because I could watch it over an over again. It's

original. But Pirates is defiantly trailing very close 2nd.

Well, you may or may not know that Tim Burton has a new movie being

released in December, starring the beloved Johnny Depp. The movie is

Johnny Depp Seen Combing Beach; Police Get Out The Cannons

Police have again tonight voiced their anger with beachcombers who

have been picking up cargo washed up on beaches along Branscombe Beach

after the grounding of the MSC Napoli.

After two days of looting police have constantly been voicing outrage

at people for not abiding to the law. They don't however seem to have

stopped them, although the police are those with the power to arrest

people. Are the police working to rule or something?

Despite all the derision being thrown at locals and those who have

travelled from further afield to collect items that have washed

overboard from the cargo ship, the police have missed off voicing

concern with a big player in the situation.

The owner of the ship!

Perhaps they could be more involved and angry at the owner of the MSC

Napoli which had to be run aground to prevent in breaking up in bad

weather when a crack appeared in the vessel's side during the storms

which lashed the south coast last week.

If the ship was correctly maintained, this wouldn't be happening and

if the police conducted themselves in a slightly more professional

manner than shouting at people who aren't technically doing anything

illegal, then this whole furore wouldn't make them look quite as

desperate.

But, looking at the pictures, it does look fun, Whiskey Galore for

all!

Johnny Depp weekend

It's not often that I feel compelled to recommend new movies. I'm an

old movie nut, so, typically, if it's in black and white, it's gonna

be good in my mind. I gushed a few weeks ago on Charlie and the

Chocolate Factory and not just because it was a Tim Burton/Johnny Depp

collaboration. I feel the need to recommend another Depp movie...

Finding Neverland. What a magical experience. I'm not going to go on

and on and on about Depp because I think his work speaks for itself.

But this was a tremendous film. It captured everything that must have

been going on in Barrie's mind as he was creating Peter Pan. And it

all made sense, according to the movie.

The kid who played Peter Davies, who also was Charlie in Charlie and

the Chocolate Factory (at Depp's insistance), was phenomenol. I think

he may go on to be one of those rare child stars who will make the

move from child star to adult star almost seamless, a la Ron Howard or

Jodie Foster. I hearitly recommend this film. Even if you aren't a

Depp fan. I think it's better than Chocolat and I LOVED that movie!!

It was probably the first one to make me sit up and take notice of

Depp's range as an actor more than his previous roles had done for me.

No, this is not about me or Johnny Depp.

I was wondering to myself, how not-so-great-looking guys and gals

become stars in the movies.

I am so much reminded of Vijay. The Ilaya Thalapathi as he is known

amongst his fans in TN. Oh, how can I forget Rajinikanth.

But then Vijay and Rajini are bigger hits than lets say Ajit,

Kamalhassan...

When Vijay was launched, forget men even women would not have kind of

liked him. But over a period of time with movies of his releasing,

every now and then (thanks maybe to his parent's connections), Vijay

stayed on. A couple of good films with meaty roles, Vijay has

transformed and is likely to be the next Super Star (Rajini).

No denying that Vijay is very talented.

So, what makes these guys turn around and become successful.

Is it that they are forcefed to us and we get used to them?

Does this happen to brands as well...Can a brand fail initially and

then if brand persists and improves, it does have a chance.

Tim Burton Day! Starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter!

So...kids back in school, Jethro at home working on his website, I'm

suffering with a borrowed computer for now, it rained this week, I'm

tired, I rode the red mare yesterday in 33 C heat and we both had

sweat dripping off us, people in town don't know how to drive, blah

blah blah blah.

Here's what really counts- TIM BURTON DAY!

Apparently there's a film festival in Venice this week. I wouldn't

know because if you live within a two hour drive of Toronto, which I

do, then there is only one film festival in this solar system, and

that would be the TIFF. Well, Johnny Depp is not at the TIFF this

year. Because he's in Venice. With his buddy Tim. And Tim's gorgeous

wife Helena, who is one of my favourites. I am not in Venice but no

big deal, I never go to those things. You have to like, line up and

stuff. Yeesh.

But I digress...TIM BURTON DAY!!!! Is this going to be a national

holiday? It should be! It was on Wednesday! I almost missed it!

(Thanks Marni for pointing me to the pictures!) He got a Golden Lion

Award.

Here's Tim getting his Golden Lion award. Wow. I am not even sure what

a Golden Lion Award is, but he deserves!

My next book which does not exist yet other than in scribbled note

form is going to have a much more Burtonesque tone to it. I'm planning

to print out a few pictures of some good Burton trees (think Sleepy

Hollow and Big Fish) and hang them beside my desk. Right beside my

giant Captain Jack Sparrow cardboard stand! Hee hee!

Speaking of awesome...Johnny! Man, I dig this guy. He is so slick and

so disheveled at the same time. Nobody does it better. I come close.

yeah, admit, I come close but Johnny is the master.

There he is in his perfect white suit jacket...and his hair looks like

he got Vanessa to hack it short with a pair of dull scissors. And she

was probably blindfolded at the time. Possibly tipsy, because they are

in Europe after all and from what I hear, the Europeans like their

Vino. I love Vanessa because Johnny loves Vanessa and if their idea of

fun is drunken blindfolded dull scissors haircuts, then I am okay with

it. (As long as nobody gets hurt.)

He cannot be uglified. It is impossible. And I even have some really

gnarly Johnny pictures...on MY computer...which is in a coma right

now... so I'm sorry, all you get today are Beautiful Johnny Pictures.

Gahhhhh! Johnny! You are making me weak!

See this? I'm going to practice this move and bust it out when I do my

next red carpet walk!

I wonder if we'll get to do it next year. The Juno awards are in

Calgary next year. Coooool! I gotta try this one. That's an awesome

move!

This man is so wicked cool that he even looks good when he gets out of

an airplane.

When I get out of an airplane I am usually wearing a red hoodie and

jeans with holes and battered Reeboks. And a pink John Deere hat. And

freshly fuschia'd hair. You know? Slick and disheveled? I'm taking

lessons.

Jethro is just disheveled. He doesn't bust out slick until he

absolutely has to, and then it's always the man in black routine. He

wouldn't wear a white jacket if he was paid. He don't care what colour

his suit is as long as it's black.

Tim Burton wears black. He's awesome.

Well today it's only going to be 30 C but so humid that breathing will

be like inhaling a wet blanket. I'll be riding the brown and white

pony mare today. She's a barrel of fun. It might be a short ride.

About Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp is one of my all time favourite actors, which is why I am

looking forward to the upcoming release of Pirates of the Caribbean:

Dead Man's Chest.

In a rare clean-cut appearance as J.M. Barrie in Finding Neverland

(2004)

As the wacky Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The

Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

I enjoyed so many of his movies, and the one I liked the most is his

role in the 1993 beautiful drama, What's Eating Gilbert Grape. He made

a great impression on me, not least because he looked so young and

handsome in it. That movie also introduced me to Leonardo diCaprio as

an unknown teenager but even back then, Leo proved himself to be a

darn good actor.

When Chocolat came out in 2000, he played the part of a gypsy named

Roux opposite Juliette Binoche. That movie was also a favourite and in

some way, it's like a first (understated) glimpse of what we were to

see of Depp as a crazy pirate in the 2003 blockbuster.

His personal life could be the subject of a movie itself but I guess

it is a testimony of his strength of character that he had managed to

lived through those troubling years and establish himself as a

credible and respected actor along with settling down to a

domesticated life with partner Vanessa Paradis and daughter Lily-Rose

(7) and son John Christopher (4).

It is amazing how a wild boy like Depp could turn out so well in the

end. I hope to see more of his films in the years to come. And

hopefully too, he will continue to enjoy much success in both his

personal and professional life.

If he's a fruit, I'd say he is LUSCIOUS ...

I knew that this would be the perfect story for Hollywood! He is

producing it but he doesn't have the rights to the book that is being

written by the widow, Michael Mann jumped on that right away and

outbid everyone:

Johnny Depp is planning a film about a former Russian security

agent whose poisoning in London has touched off an international

mystery, according to the trade magazine Variety one of three

possible Hollywood projects about the case.

One of the other projects, involving the director Michael Mann,

came after Columbia Pictures agreed to pay $1.5 million for the

film rights to a book about the former Russian agent, Alexander

Litvinenko, being co-written by his widow and a close friend, the

report said.

Warner Bros., which was outbid for that book, acquired the rights

to a book by Alan Cowell, a New York Times reporter, which is

expected to be published next year by Doubleday, Variety said.

Depp's production company, Infinitum Nihil, will produce the film

and the actor could star in it.

Johnny Depp Needs A New Photo Shoot

I recently discussed People magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive" issue and

how uninspired most of the image selections were - too many sweaters,

closeups, movie stills and old photos. Well, I was scanning through

Entertainment Weekly's "Top 25 Entertainers of the Year" feature and

came across Johnny Depp yet again - yawn - but I noticed a familiarity

between EW and People and the use of photographs. I took a screencap

of it to illustrate.

Now, from the looks of their website layouts I assume EW and People

are part of the same company (I'm not down with US publications, okay)

but couldn't they have used different pictures. It's not like these

publications don't have more than one solitary photo to use whenever

they talk about Depp. And it's not even a good picture! Ugh.

Nevertheless, here are some of the other photos I actually liked. Oh

to be in that room with Kyra Sedgwick, Glenn Close, Mary-Louise Parker

and Holly Hunter. Oh to be in any room with Shia LaBeouf (even if it

is, yes, a recycled image). And I guess Kanye West is pretty cool,

by a Mallen streak, Depp looks terrifyingly authentic as the 19th

century mass murderer.

Edward Scissorhands director Tim Burton has managed to enlist Depp

to create a faithful film adaptation in which most of the action

unfolds in song. Depp was a revelation, and surprised himself with

his singing ability.

He said: "I knew I could stay in key to some degree. But I didn't

know if I could sustain a note, or belt one out."

Sweeney Todd spins a gruesome tale of vengeance in 19th-century

London. Director Burton insisted on lashings of blood as his

ghoulish barber slashed clients in the gory scenes.

Yikes! Not sure if I'll be first in line to see this one. I don't know

how I feel about putting mass murder to music.

spelling it) as the most charming film character of our current

lacklustre century.

However, I'm not sure he passes my haircut test. Jack Sparrow seems to

have bought some poor quality extensions in Brixton market while Mr

Wonka has borrowed his sister's wig.

I never saw Edward Scissorhands (grandson too small for such terrors)

but I understand his hair was rather unmanageable in that.

But what a fascinating face he has. How can this angelic-looking man

have been the rake-hell one understands from the newspapers? A friend

The many faces of Johnny Depp...

One the first movies I watched where I really noticed Johnny Depp was

when he played "Edward Scissorhands" in the movie with the same title.

Depp seems to alternate playing characters such as Edward who are dark

and slightly disturbing with those who are more charismatic such as

his role as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean series. You

have the scene where Edward is cutting the bushes with abandon and

it's eerie yet at the same time in part due to the musical score by

Danny Elfman when you then contrast that to the swashbuckling Jack

Sparrow who in a swordfight scene with Will Turner in the blacksmith

shop clangs their swords in battle in time with the music which also

adds to the alternating humor and intensity of their fight. In Pirates

of the Caribbean, Depp plays somewhat of a villain, yet one with a

good heart.

In his latest movie, Sweeney Todd, he plays a dark character this time

even more disturbing than Edward Scissorhands, with much more murder

than in both of the other two movies and more of a true villain than

in Pirates of the Caribbean. To view the trailer and to learn more

After experiencing the fatuous fabulosity that is James Lipton via the

Leading Man series, my interest was definitely piqued at the November

20th release of the DVD of his interview with the swaggering Jack

Sparrow, aka Johnny Depp. Depp is notoriously reticent--would this

interview consist mainly of Lipton, always in love with the sound of

his own voice, answering his own questions?

I recall seeing Depp appear on the Rosie O'Donnell show about ten

years ago. Rosie said something like, "You play the guitar?". He said

"yes." It was painful to watch; excruciating as O'Donnell tried to get

her guest to engage in a dialogue. He clearly didn't want to be there.

I can understand why Depp doesn't like to do the whole interview

thing--it's a pain in the ass. It's stupid. It's a waste of time. But

it also comes with the territory. Seriously, how hard is it to come up

with an amusing anecdote to charm the audience--the people buying

tickets to your movies--for five minutes?

Despite the appearance of the cover of the DVD where it looks like

Johnny is thinking, "Oh God, not the Bernard Pivot questionnaire, you

supercilious twit!," Lipton actually manages to get a decent interview

out of Depp. Although he is not as engaging or eloquent as his

contemporaries, Russell Crowe or Sean Penn from the Leading Men

series, Depp does open up (relatively speaking) about his professional

craft and even his personal life. Although recorded February 25, 2002,

well before his iconic portrayal of a pirate in the Disney trilogy,

Johnny Depp had already amassed a solid and eclectic body of work.

The DVD contains an introduction by Lipton, but unlike the Leading Men

DVD, there are no other extras. Still, it's a interesting glimpse into

an intriguing persona. So for those interested in the craft of acting,

fans of Johnny Depp or even those enamored of the unctuous James

Lipton (he has no tattoos--does anyone care?), this would make a nice

Johnny Depp is set to wed long-term girlfriend Vanessa Paradis this

summer. The couple have toyed with the idea in the past but their

daughter Lily-Rose's recent illness has 'spurred them into action',

according to a source. The couple's seven-year-old was hospitalized in

London for nine days in March suffering from E.coli food poisoning and

her condition was touch and go.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean star and Vanessa, 34, were both at their

daughter's bedside. Depp, 43, refused to return to the set of his

latest film Sweeney Todd in London until she was out of danger,

forcing filming to be stopped. The source, who lives in the village,

said: 'Johnny and Vanessa have one of the strongest relationships in

Hollywood but after their daughter was taken ill the family became an

even closer-knit unit.

They have talked about marriage on and off for a long time but the

recent emotional roller-coaster they have had to endure seems to have

spurred them into action. The couple, who have been together for eight

years and have two children, are understood to be planning a discreet

ceremony in the south of France where they live. However locals will

be disappointed if they expect to catch a glimpse of the newly weds.

Rather than marry in the local church, L'eglise St Martin, the couple

are expected to hold the ceremony in the ancient chapel within the

50-acre grounds of their idyllic rural hideaway in the tiny village of

Plan de la Tour, an hour from St Tropez.

The source said: 'We understand they will marry this summer. Villagers

thought they would wed in the church here but we now hear that they

have a little chapel in the grounds of their home.

'It wouldn't make sense they would celebrate there because they don't

like drawing attention to themselves. The whole reason they live here

is because they like the quiet life.'

The couple's two children, Lily-Rose and Jack, four, will attend along

with just a clutch of friends.

The couple have been living mainly in Richmond, Surrey this year while

Depp fulfils his filming commitments but they make frequent trips to

their palatial French villa.

Local taxi driver Jean-Philippe Reno, 44, said: 'They are a very

private couple. We often see them out and about in the village but no

one would dream of hassling them. That's the reason Johnny likes it

here so much. 'There's no paparazzi. He can just be a normal person.

It's no surprise that they want to celebrate in the privacy of their

home.' According to French law, the couple must obtain legal consent

from the mayor to marry. Once the formalities are over couples are

then free to have a religious ceremony.

A spokeswoman for Plan de la Tour's mayor, Florence Lanliard, refused

to comment on the rumor. She said: 'We never discuss personal issues.

We will not make any comment about Johnny Depp or Vanessa Paradis.'

With a population of 2000, it is easy to see why camera-shy Depp loves

Plan de la Tour. If they are at home, without fail they will drive in

their black Chrysler Voyager to the Thursday outdoor market where they

select their fruit and vegetables and even buy clothes from the

bargain racks. At the market last week locals gossiped about the

village playing host to the wedding of one of Hollywood's hottest

stars.

Stephanie, who is in her 40s, said: 'The villagers couldn't be happier

for them. But the truth of the matter is, they are such a private

family we probably won't know they have married until after the event.

There don't court attention. They love it here because they can blend

in and just be a normal family.'

Depp bought his French villa seven years ago from a German family for

�750,000. Dotted around the vast grounds are five other houses,

occupied the housekeeper, gardener and security. The tiny chapel is

behind the house on the edge of the vineyards. There is no give-away

that this is the residence of one of Hollywood's greatest actors. Even

the security cameras are out of sight, hidden in the trees. But step

inside the house and there would be no mistaking.

It has every modern luxury. The master bedroom even has its own

swimming pool. A second, much larger pool is located in the garden

alongside the vegetable and herb patch. They have four ponies for the

children and a playground with swings, a slide and a sandpit. Depp

fell in love with France while shooting The Ninth Gate there in 1998.

Although Depp is not fluent in French he happily converses with the

locals, few of whom speak a single word of English. Lily Rose, who is

bilingual, has been heard many times correcting her father. The actor

has cited his children as a primary reason for his flight to France,

saying he wanted them to 'grow up in a very simple and calm

environment, where everything is not about the next movie or the next

success'.

The doting dad added: "I love the simple things: the sunrise, the

trees, the countryside. I can take a ride into the village and have a

coffee with my girl, and people say: "Hello Johnny. How are you?" I'm

not looking around for the paparazzi.'

In honour of the release of "Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's

Chest" on DVD this week, I thought I would throw up a clip from this

Johnny Depp Interview. This little chat with Letterman took place

waaaay back in July, during the promotional run for this film.

Needless to say, I'm a huge Depp fan, and this movie was one of the

most entertaining films to hit theaters this past year. Be sure to

check it out. The final film in the trilogy is going to swagger into

theaters reeking of rum and saltwater in summer '07. Arrrrr Matey!

What's not to like about a trilogy that has pirates, Johnny Depp, and

an undead monkey? You might say: "Well, they are Disney movies..."

Okay, fair enough. But Depp's performance as Captain Jack Sparrow

transcends Disney's usual schlock. If it is guilty of one sin, I guess

that would be the sin of it's own financial success; jaded film buffs

that usually avoid high-grossing "summer blockbusters" are missing out

Lovely little portrait of Johnny Depp in one of his Libertine

absinthe-soaked roles you might think. In fact, its 'Despair'

(1844-1845), a self-portrait by the French realist painter Gustave

Courbet (1819-77).

It first came to my attention in a newspaper story in the summer of

2006, at the opening of an exhibition entitled 'Rebels And Martyrs:

The Image Of The Artist In The 19th Century' at London's National

Gallery. The Independent reported that the exhibition's curator's knew

of the painting's existence and wanted to include it in the show.

However the painting had vanished, after being last seen in 1978 at a

Courbet retrospective at the Royal Academy. The week before the Rebel

show was due to be installed, the curators received a phone call from

France offering to lend them the painting. The owner's identity

remains a mystery.

Yesterday, I bought the New York Review of Books' to see the painting

staring out at me once more. There is a major Courbet exhibition which

recently ended in Paris, soon to be seen at the

Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (February 27-May 18, 2008)

As John Golding writes in 'The Born Rebel Artist': 'This is the image

that was chosen for the traditional banners that Paris sports to

advertise major exhibitions. It would have pleased Courbet to be

presiding over hundreds of thousands of Parisians as they roamed

through the streets of the capital. And the fact that this relatively

small picture survives magnificently the test of being blown up to

twenty or thirty times the size of the original testifies to its power

and the beauty of its paint effects. It will be seen on posters in New

York.'

I meant to write a post about this ages ago! When I watched Finding

Neverland earlier this year I realised that he is the perfect choice

to play the part of Freddie Mercury, if they ever decided to make a

film of his life. And then came the promotional stills for Charlie and

the Chocolate factory (review coming soon!); his hair really sparked

off my imagination! I made up a few comparison pictures but I dont

know where they went. There were some very good stills from Finding

Neverland. I think the above picture is quite good though because it

shows off their facial similarities and Freddie has a bit of that

Willy Wonka hair going on! Of course Depps face is a bit too petite

for Freddies but thats a small issue (oh the puns!), more importantly

he has some of the mannorisms and the talent to carry it off.

Anyway, this is the kind of thing that 'Podge and Roge' should be

getting into, and not that We Will Rock You malarky. So come on Roger,

This is one of the hottest news today. Last year, Warner Bros. had

adaptation of Gregory David Roberts's novel Shantaram. The film was

then to be directed by Peter Weir, but he later opted out of the

project. However, now, Mira Nair has been finalized to direct the

I recently caught Sleepy Hollow on telly the other night. It's a

beautifully rendered film, and although I don't normally respond to

Tim Burton's brand of grotesque humour and gothic vision, this film is

an exception.

I love cowards, and even more so when they're male. Johnny Depp's

Ichabod Crane is "all posture and carefully learned mannerism,

attitude and fastidiousness". He's a "detective of the new order", as

Roger Ebert puts it, who believes in scientific method, but finds his

emotions--chiefly fear--getting the better of him.

The battle between intellect and fear pulls the character in opposite

directions, and this conflict is pleasurable to watch.

To see him jump on a chair in panic at the sight of a spider and

screech to a twelve year old boy, "Kill it! Kill it! No--don't kill

it--stun it!", really drives it home: Depp-Crane is a coward of the

first water.

This is all a preamble to sharing my favorite scene. Crane has been

scared out of his mind, and spends days holed up in his bedroom in his

pajamas. Suddenly, inexplicably, he violently flings open his door,

fully dressed, and announces dramatically:

"I have conquered my fear."

The scene is at once comical and a serious turning point.

How did he conquer his fear? We don't know, but it is implied that in

his exile, he fully embraced his fear and that this, paradoxically,

allowed him to move towards a liberating realization.

When it comes to the Christmas release of SWEENEY TODD, there's

definitely a burst of anticipation in the air. Why? Because rumor has

it Johnny Depp is back with tasty, award-winning vengeance!

But of course he is - vengeance is what Sweeney Todd is all about.

Some will have trouble with Depp portraying a mad slasher, but those

few people who braved Depp's astounding but very dark and gritty

performance in THE LIBERTINE know that this actor can go stone-cold

scary with the best of them.

Although a blade will again be a prominent prop in Depp's hand, as it

has been in his other films, don't expect the naivet� of Edward

Scissorhands or the roguish spankiness of Captain Jack to be much in

evidence. In Dreamworks' SWEENEY TODD, Depp will morph into something

altogether different, altogether sinister in the end.

until finally the trailers began appearing recently on the web.

It will be quite a treat to see Depp slip to the depths of dark

depravity as he goes from the blessedly happy gentleman Benjamin

Barker to the tortuously grieving demon barber of Fleet Street known

as Sweeney Todd. Well, what should an honorable man do when an

evil-doer (Judge Turpin) sends him to prison for life in order to

steal his wife and child? Chances are, you, too, might hatch one of

the most macabre and disturbing revenge plots in musical theatre

history.

Musical theatre? Yes, that's right. For those who don't know, Tim

Burton's version of SWEENEY TODD is indeed based on the famous, award

winning Broadway production "Sweeney Todd...The Demon Barber of Fleet

Street," with songs by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler. In

Burton's film, there is also singing, lots of it.

The mention of singing begs the question of whether Johnny Depp can

actually sing. Yes, folks, he can sing. And not just a snippet of

drunken salty baritone as was croaked out in Pirates of the Caribbean,

Curse of the Black Pearl. As Sweeney Todd, Johnny Depp sings

throughout the movie (which is as much light opera as it is a

musical).

The singing is demanding and it is said that Depp more than holds his

own. Indeed...

drum roll, ... word has it that Depp has a "killer" voice quite up to

the challenge of Sondheim's music.

In pre-production days, Sondheim himself approved Depp's singing for

the role. Tim Burton didn't seems a bit concerned, knowing that Johnny

began his career in Florida (and later California) in a band.

Additionally, Depp's lovely mate, Vanessa Paradis is a famous French

chanteuse who undoubtedly offered some special tips to her guy.

Vanessa's recent album was #1 on the charts in France this September.

Nevertheless, despite assurances, movie fans waited anxiously for

first-hand assessment. Finally, during the Venice Film Festival Depp,

well turned out in a white dinner jacket, (see pics here) presented

Tim Burton with a lifetime achievement award. Then, attendees were

treated to an 8-10 minute short from the film. The first review came

from Mastidon over at Ain't It Cool who had a front-row seat at the

Venice debut of Depp's singing.

"And I'm here to tell you he has a killer voice. I wish I had a

recording of the lyrics for you. Johnny sings a love song to the razor

blade as he holds it in his hand! The song is about how happy he is to

finally have the blade in his hands for his sweet revenge. Towards the

end of the song, Helena joins in and they sing a duet to a knife!!!!!

The scene ends with Johnny holding the knife in his hand and he says

Nick Vivarelli of Variety reports: "Singing 'My Friends' Depp proved

he can carry a tune, dueting delightfully with Bonham Carter, herself

debuting as a chantoosie."

Also check out the comments on the recent sneak preview by Tom O'Neil

writing for Gold Derby and the LA Times. In O'Neil's words, the film

is fantastic!

Musical or not, it appears that you will not be hauling out the little

kiddies to see this Tim Burton, Johnny Depp masterpiece. Even PG-13

kids may not be able to see the film; indeed, their viewing fate

depends largely on Burton's willingness to wield his editing chops and

cut out a bit of gore.

Although his hero, Sweeney Todd has little reluctance to slash and

bake, Burton, the director, is not at all eager to hack up his movie.

Time will tell whether SWEENEY TODD gets stamped "R." Regardless of

its MPAA rating, the eagerly awaited film will open in wide release in

the US on December 21, 2007 and it will draw a good crowd.

Clearly Burton has mastered the troll like atmosphere of London a la

Charles Dickens. The sets are magnificent and compliment the horror

tale of Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett (with her tender meat pies)

perfectly.

The cast of Sweeney Todd is a spooky treat as well. Has there ever

been a better villain than Alan Rickman? In SWEENEY TODD, he plays the

predatory Judge Turpin. Helena Bonham Carter is the cuddly cunning and

quite odd Mrs. Lovett and Sacha Baron Cohen, quite a warbler himself,

takes on the role of Signor Adolfo Pirelli.

In the end, the legendary Sweeney Todd (1756-1802) is said to have met

his end at a public hanging cheered by thousands. In the Broadway

play, Todd's end is equally as dire as his own cutthroat blade

dispatches him. But how will the film end?

Whether Tim Burton will exercise poetic license with the ending of the

film remains to be seen. However, the epilogue of the stage play most

likely will apply to the film as well:

"To seek revenge may lead to hell, but everyone does it, and seldom as

well as Sweeney, as Sweeney Todd, the demon barber of Fleet Street..."

90s, has given up driving fast cars and now lives "calmly" in France

comfort. We all go through stages of wanting fast cars and bikes. I

cast recording for the recent revival of Sweeney Todd -- will also

release the soundtrack for the forthcoming "Sweeney Todd" film. Titan

Books will publish the film's companion book. The new film, directed

by Tim Burton, is slated for a Dec. 21 release. An updated credits

listing reveals that Nonesuch Records will issue the film's

soundtrack. A release date has not yet been announced. Also in the

works is a companion book for the film to be released on Dec. 4 by

Titan Books. The hardback -- penned by (the only on-set) journalist

Mark Salisbury -- will include "interviews with Burton and the cast

and crew, extracts from the shooting script, over 200 photos, plus

concept drawing and production designs," as a release states.

Following the reveal of a poster at San Diego's Comic-Con

International and another shot of stars Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham

Carter, the place holder on the official website has been replaced

with an ominous graphic of Depp (as Sweeney) at the end of a tunnel

with a straight-blade in hand. A sign that flashes down into view

reads, "Beware, Sweeney Todd is coming this Christmas." Fans can

currently sign up for updates on the film by visiting

A GRANDAD has thanked a Hollywood star for the comforting words that

helped bring some cheer to the final days of his dying grandson's

life.

Pirates of the Caribbean hero Johnny Depp sent an emotional video

message to eight-year-old Mark Westwood as he fought an aggressive

brain tumour.

In the message the Pirates of the Caribbean star told him to keep his

chin up and wished him lots of luck for the future.

Paul Robinson, of Levenshulme, said his grandson watched the 35-

second video email `over and over' in the final days of his short

life.

Paul, 61, who lives on St Oswald Road, said: "We are so grateful to

Johnny Depp for everything he did for Mark.

"Mark was a massive fan of his films and the message was really

special and personal to him. It really meant a lot."

The video arrived after Mark's parents - Barry and Sarah - became

friendly with a couple, who also had a sick child, while Mark was

being treated at Alder Hey Hospital.

The couples turned to each other for support during their sons'

treatments and, when Mark's parents revealed that he was a fanatical

fan of Pirates of the Caribbean films, they discovered their new

friends were pals with the Golden Globe-winning star.

Not long after the conversation the personal email from Johnny Depp

dropped in to Sarah's email inbox.

During the dedicated message the 44-year-old star expressed his

admiration for Mark, told him to `keep his chin up' and wished him

`all the best and lots of good luck for the future'.

Johnny Depp dressed up as his Pirates of the Caribbean character -

Captain Jack Sparrow - for the video, after he heard of Mark's love of

the films. He also sent a signed photograph to the youngster.

Mark was first diagnosed with a brain tumour in May 2005 and despite

three operations he lost his fight for life in January last year.

Mark lived in Prestatyn, Wales, after his mum, dad and two brothers -

Peter and Lee - moved from their family home on Pennington Street,

just off Stockport Road in Levenshulme.

Mark's mum, Sarah, 37, was brought up on Hannah Street in Levenshulme

with her mum and dad, Paul and Linda.

The family have paid an emotional tribute to their son, who was a keen

golfer.

Dad Barry said: "Mark did so many special things during his life and

we have a lot of people to thank.

"Alongside the very special message from Johnny Depp, he was granted

his wish of becoming a police officer for the day by North Wales

Police and he got to step out on the turf as a mascot for his team

Manchester City."

Following his grandson's death, Paul has become a fundraiser for the

charity, Brain Tumour UK.

He said: "I don't want Mark's death to be a waste and after going

through the experience I have found out there is hardly any funding in

this area."

Paul is now set to host a fundraising gig with his rock band, Killer

Instinct, to raise money for Brain Tumour UK.

The gig will take place at the Thatched House music venue, 74

Johnny Depp is the Screen Actors Guild Award winner for best actor -

Motion Picture 2003 for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the

Black Pearl. Best known for his frequent portrayals as eccentric

characters such as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean

trilogy.

Jack Sparrow is the Pirate Lord of the Caribbean Sea, and a trickster

who uses wit and deceit to attain his goals.

One of the scenes I liked is when Jack and Barbossa duel in the cave,

and Barbossa hits Jack in the face. Barbossa yells, "Aaaah," and Jack

takes off running with his arms waving wildly in the air. That is so

funny!!

And my favorite lines of Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean

movie are;

"Bring me that horizon, nanananana really bad eggs, drink up me

hearties yo ho!"

"Me? I'm dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be

dishonest. Honestly. It's the honest ones you want to watch out for,

because you can never predict when they're going to do something

incredibly...stupid."

Another Johnny Depp movie I like is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

His character as Willy Wonka: the greatest chocolate maker in the

world. He closed his factory, fired all of his workers, and replaced

them with natives of Loompaland because of his fear of corporate spies

working in the pay of other, less successful companies. He sends out

five Golden Tickets and allowed five children to visit the factory in

order to find an heir after finding a grey hair. He is intelligent,

but has stunted social skills that render him extremely bizarre to

most people from the "outside world", due to his unhappy childhood and

the long isolation from the world since the factory's closure.

One of the scenes I liked is when Charlie enters the chocolate room

where the chocolate waterfall and chocolate river are. The best candy

to eat is the buttercup. Augstus Gloop falls into the chocolate river

and gets sucked up a pipe . Willy Wonka sends Augustus' mom and dad to

the fudge room.

The dialouge in the movie makes me laugh, Veruca Salt reminds me of my

niece.

Mr. Salt: "Snozzwangers? Vermicious Knids? What kind of rubbish is

that?"

Willy Wonka: "I'm sorry, but all questions must be submitted in

writing. And so, in the greatest of secrecy I transported the entire

population of Oompa Loompas to my factory here."

Veruca Salt: "Hey, Daddy, I want an Oompa Loompa. I want you to get me

an Oompa Loompa right away."

Mr. Salt: "All right, Veruca, all right. I'll get you one before the

day is out."

Veruca Salt: "I want an Oompa Loompa now!"

Violet Beauregarde: "CAN it, you nit!"

To conclude my debate as to which scene and movie is his best, I will

have to choose Pirates of the Caribbean because he won Best Actor.

It is already proven that Johnny Depp is one of the finest and one of

the best actors in Hollywood today. I like him when he portrays a

character being witty and bad in a movie. He is very good at that.

Speaking of movies, Johnny Depp has an upcoming movie Sweeny Todd to

be shown this month, visit the official Sweeney Todd movie site

It is directed by his friend Tim Burton, and will be in theaters

December 21, 2007. In this movie, Johnny Depp gets revenge on those

who harmed him and his family. It looks to be very dark yet funny. It

is sure to be another excellent film with Depp. I really can't wait!

Johnny Depp's range as an actor is undeniable. From his portrayal of

demonized English Inspector Frederick Abberline in the re-imagining of

the "Jack The Ripper" investigation in From Hell to his playful antics

as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, Depp

has proven he can take on any role and deliver a pleasing performance.

And on December 21st, fans will get another chance to see Depp

reunited with Director Tim Burton in another dark film set in 19th

century London. Depp plays Sweeney Todd - in a film by the same name -

as a barber, who is wrongly accused in the death of his wife and

daughter. Having just been released from prison, Todd vows revenge in

this masterful thriller.

While I've seen almost all of Depp's films, I am most fond of his

portrayal of Inspector Abberline in From Hell and Dean Corso in The

Ninth Gate. While the latter is far from the settings of From Hell or

Sweeney Todd, the film mixes the playful and arrogant side of the

actor within a serious and dark setting. In the opening scene we are

introduced to Corso while he is conning a couple into selling a

priceless volume of Don Quixote. Although an ethically challenged

situation, it sets up the rest of the movie in showing that Corso can

use his expertise of rare literature to help solve the mystery of The

Ninth Gate. Conversely, Depp's portrayal of Abberline in From Hell is

as much about the flaws of his character as it is about the horrid

crimes for which he is seeking the killer. Abberline becomes so

immersed in the investigation that he risks his own sanity by taking

opium for which he believes will allow him to see visions. His

character rises to the occasion when challenged by his boss over

whether he is deeply involved in the case or has indeed gone insane.

The range of these two characters lends itself well to the line

between sane and insane for which Sweeney Todd toggles in Depp's

Being the obsessive compulsive person that I am, I am still thinking

about the pastel demo and lesson I will be doing in my son's 7th grade

art class. In preparation, I played around with this portrait of J.

Depp, stopping after an hour. I chose this subject because the colors

and patterns of dark and light are so dramatic; also, I was thinking

he might be a fun subject for the kids to watch me demo and/or try to

paint themselves. It also works for the purpose of explaining how to

look at big shapes, work dark to light, consider values, etc. But I am

he had done i loved him deeply, without any luck.

Not a single trace I found.

So I seeked myself to Anger and Hate even more.

But then he came back....

But to my dissapointment only to look

after my relationship with Anger and Hate.

He made the bound stronger between us and then he

dissapeared again. And so it has been continue for years.

I guess I'm just a bump in the road to drive by and sometimes

stop for a short visit to see how life's going.

be missed.

First, JOHNNY DEPP is Sweeney Todd! After watching the Pirates of the

Caribbean trilogy, I've always regard that Johnny Depp is a great

actor. Second, it's a horror/crime/thriller/musical movie. Third,

great story. Based on a myth? I've no idea.

I was prepared to like Mark Salisbury's SWEENEY TODD: The Demon Barber

of Fleet Street. I like the musical it was based on. I like Depp and

Burton and Sondheim. What I wasn't prepared to do was love this book!

Johnny Depp and director Tim Burton have teamed up again for this film

adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's acclaimed musical thrilled "Sweeney

Todd." Mark Salisbury's book is an in depth, informative chronicle of

the making of the movie which opens here in the US this December. Mr.

Salisbury's book never gets boring and the author never lectures the

reader while sharing this book's story. Salisbury hit all the right

notes when he wrote this companion book by layering the backstory of

the legend of Sweeney Todd with the present day circumstances that put

the players in the right spots at the right time to bring this version

of SWEENEY TODD to the screen.

The well crafted book with 175 glossy, big pages with more than 200

photographs and illustrations and it is divided into two parts.

Salisbury uses pictures and production artwork to tell the "making of"

story in Part One, weaving in quotes from producer Richard Zanuck,

director Tim Burton and cast members Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham

Carter, Alan Rickman as well as crew and other cast members to help

the reader grasp the goings on behind the scenes. Salisbury was wise

to also add his own first hand experiences while on the SWEENEY TODD

set at Pinewood Studios to bring an overview of the different pieces

that brought this musical thriller together. The author then has the

reader "attend the tale of Sweeney Todd" in Part Two, by adding

illustrations, production stills and sketches to text pieces from the

script. This is no ordinary companion book, this is a companion book

that brings humanity and heart to an often macabre, gruesome and

bloody story. It's easy to see that this is a labor of love by the

author.

Mark Salisbury is the former editor of Britain's Empire magazine and

is the author of numerous movie books, many in collaboration with Tim

Burton. Mr. Burton penned the forward to this book.

This is not your average glossy, trendy coffee table book. It's a must

read for SWEENEY TODD fans, the fans of Stephen Sondheim, Tim Burton

and Johnny Depp. And it also serves as a wonderful invitation to those

who've never met the demon barber of Fleet Street, to those who've

never seen a musical and to those who've not yet seen the magic that

Burton and Depp bring to a project, to get to know how a book can work

hand in hand with a film. Mark Salisbury has written what I consider

Did Depp base his Willie Wonka on Michael Jackson?

That's what everyone's saying, based on simply looking at the clips.

Here's what he's saying:

Depp said his inspiration for the Wonka character was "part game

show host, part children's show host... locked in a closet for

about 10 or 15 years".

But he has denied rumours that he based his performance on Michael

Jackson.

"It never entered my mind," he told Sydney's Herald Sun newspaper,

saying the character was more similar to reclusive billionaire

Howard Hughes.

Of course, he simply must deny it at this point.

Director Tim Burton has this:

"I always laugh about that because to me there is like a night and

day difference," he told reporters in Australia recently.

"Michael Jackson likes children and Willy Wonka can't stand

children.

"To me there is absolutely no connection as far as my mind goes."

Well, of course, you can't make a mainstream movie for the whole

family where the lead character has a sexual interest in children. You

have to scour that out of the story. So the inappropriate love is

translated into hate -- an easy and obvious step.

UPDATE: Seeing the film, I concluded that Depp did not try to act like

Jackson.

I know, it's about time! I haven't updated in yonks. Happy New Year!

2007 sounds so wierd - I'll get used to it around November. Anyway,

back to studying for me - and trying to make a film out of competition

for the Fresh Film Festival...any ideas? Looking forward to quite a

few 2006 movies that spilled oer to January and February here! :D

Anyway, I don't know what to think of this montage - is it my best or

worst or a mix of both? The music choice is quite uninspired - Danny

Elfman themes from Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands...oh well!

I was given an exclusive peak at the first footage from Tim Burton's

upcoming film version of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd, which will

be released next year. Johnny Depp was presenting a clearly delighted

Burton with Venice's career Golden Lion, incredibly the director's

first ever award from a major film festival. Depp said: 'Tim is my

favourite director. I feel very lucky to have been included in his

life and in his world of cinema. He's a true original and a true

auteur, a rare breed in today's cinema.' The exclusive clip was then

shown. It featured Depp's Todd duetting with Helena Bonham Carter's

panda-eyed Mrs Lovett. Both were doing their own singing, and most

impressively, as they powered through a dark ode to a cut-throat

razor. In the brief dialogue, it seemed that Depp might just have

finally got a decent cockney accent, and he held the gleaming object

Sweeney Todd - The Johnny Depp show

Watched Sweeney Todd tonight. The movie that just won the Golden Globe

for Best Picture and is widely tipped to win the Oscar as well.

It is a FANTASTIC film. Tim Burton, who has to his credit other

fantastically weird Johnny Depp films like Edward Scissorhands, Ed

Wood, Sleepy Hollow among others, has forayed into musicals for the

first time... and he's a genius.

The movie is set in victorian London where men considered long hats,

tail coats and carriage rides as run of the mill. Johnny Depp plays

the role of Benjamin Barker, a barber who was imprisoned on a false

charge by an evil judge (Alan Rickman - Snape in Harry Potter) so that

he could get his hands on the barber's wife (which he does). Years

later, Benjamin, now known as Sweeney Todd, comes back for revenge.

There are a couple of other very interesting twists to the story but

won't spoil it for you.

The movie is grand without being Moulin Rouge. It has a haunting score

(I think Moulin Rouge and Chicago would be better scores though). But

the aspect of the film that took the cake for me was the use of color,

light and shadows. It's a dark movie without trying very hard to be

(unlike so many other movies - where dark means I need to shoot in low

light!).

Johnny Depp it amazing. The man is Jack Sparrow and so so much more!

Alan Rickman is amazing as well (at times very Snape-ish in the film).

I doff my hat to whoever wrote the Broadway musical in the first

place. Who would've thought of putting a story about a serial killer

in a musical format!!!

The Johnny Depp Debate

I've been thinking about a few movies that have come out in the last

few years: "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Finding Neverland". Both of

these movies star Johnny Depp at his finest. They're both fantasy

films, the latter in part and the former in totality, and required

Depp to take on personifications that were completely unlike the actor

himself. I enjoyed both movies. "Pirates" was witty, entertaining, and

embellishing. "Neverland" was beautiful and nearly flawless in its

acting and execution. As Captain Jack Sparrow, Depp literally

transformed himself into a loud mouthed and equally drunk pirate

captain. I remember reading articles about his kids being embarrassed

to go out with him in public during the filming of the movie because

he dressed like the captain and everything. "Finding Neverland," for

me, is one, if not, the ultimate film in the Johnny Depp collection.

His role as Sir James Matthew Barrie, who created "Peter Pan" is

wonderful and inspiring. Check this film out if you have not, it is a

tearjerker, be warned, but it is an excellent film, nonetheless. That

brings me to a much anticipated movie release for "Sweeney Todd". This

also stars Johnny Depp, who undoubtedly will be transformed once again

into a fantastic character that will light up the screen and entertain

though strong depps pirates cant catch
