Johnny Depp, I Do Not Have A Crush On You

I think Johnny Depp is a great actor. I appreciate how he choses his

roles and his commitment to those roles. I respect him. But I don't

lust after him. He's never been in my Top Five list (aka the

permission to cheat list from Hubby). When I watched 21 Jump Street

(that was the television show that made Johnny Depp a teen idol, kids)

it wasn't because I had a crush on him. I'm not sure why I watched it,

actually. But anyway, that whole teen idol thing was my only image of

Johnny Depp until I saw "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?".

He was phenomenal in that movie. I completely believed. . .no, I

completely FELT everything he did. There's a scene with Gilbert's

mother that sort of describes it:

Momma: You're my knight in shimmering armor. Did you know that?

Gilbert: I think you mean shining.

Momma: No, shimmering. You shimmer, and you glow.

I think that sums up Depp's performance.

But then you've got the first Pirates of the Caribbean. Captain Jack

is pretty much the antithesis of Gilbert Grape. As for the

performance, it's not one that you feel but it is one that you

believe.

Jack Sparrow: [after Will draws his sword] Put it away, son. It's not

worth you getting beat again.

Will Turner: You didn't beat me. You ignored the rules of engagement.

In a fair fight, I'd kill you.

Jack Sparrow: That's not much incentive for me to fight fair, then, is

it?

With a lesser actor, that exchange would have been so trite. But Depp

makes it brilliant. Depp made the whole movie brilliant, as far as I'm

concerned.

So that's why I'm beyond thrilled that Depp is playing the barber in

the Sweeney Todd movie. Hubby, even though he generally hates

musicals, LOVES Stephen Sondheim. Sweeney Todd is his favorite

Sondheim musical and we were both a little nervous about what

Hollywood would do to it. The story is so much more complex than an

average Hollywood drama. But then Tim Burton signed on to direct and

Johnny Depp joined the cast. Hubby and I breathed a sigh of relief. I

can't wait to see it. I think it's the perfect role for such a

versatile actor. This is one movie we will actually see in the

theater.

If you have no idea what movie I'm talking about, go visit the

official Sweeney Todd movie site. Or visit Sweeney Todd on MySpace.
